For Education

How Safe is Your Data?

In the 21st century, when we are all so technology savvy, it should be impossible to think that most schools have no system in place to protect and backup important data. The increasingly centralised role which technology is playing in education means that, just as in the corporate world, schools need to think about the implications of data loss. It can be all too simple to dismiss or underestimate the importance of school data.

You might think that Year 5's poetry project was interesting but is it really necessary to worry about preserving that data? Maybe not. But could the same be said of a full year group's GCSE coursework or an entire school's administrative student records? It may be a cliché, but all too often it is only after the data is lost that its real value becomes apparent.

The reality is that schools should be viewing their own data as every bit as “mission critical” as the sort of files which businesses invest time and effort in protecting. But the issue is that schools have particular requirements, meaning that they need backup solutions designed to work in an educational environment.

How Safe is Your Data?

BackupPilot delivers the latest in remote backup technology. BackupPilot is an easy to install device which operates locally at the business's main site and then transmits backed up data to a secure, remote storage centre overnight via broadband. Designed specifically with SME businesses in mind, BackupPilot overcomes some of the typical problems associated with other backup methods as well as some disadvantages of alternative remote backup solutions on the market.

One immediate issue with remote backup can be the time-consuming initial set up. But BackupPilot's “agentless architecture” removes the need for additional software, hardware or disk space and makes this initial setup much faster. The first full backup is made to a removable device which is then physically sent to the secure, remote site. The whole backup schedule is set up and managed at one central point which keeps administration and management of backups to a minimum. Having created schedules and designated which files, folders, applications and servers are to be backed up, the system is ready to go and be fully automatic. From then on only amendments made to files are backed up. Due to the smaller volume of these files, this backup happens via the school's existing broadband connection.

This sophisticated technology backs up all laptops, PCs and servers within the school, eliminating the need for manual copying of files and thereby reducing workload as well as increasing reliability. Data sent over the internet is compressed and then encrypted using 256-bit AES encryption, meaning bandwidth requirements are kept to a minimum and security is guaranteed. Not only is encryption used during transmission but also at the data centre. Data centre staff cannot access the schools' information as the same high security mechanism is in place to store files.

With older backup methods such as tapes, the restoration process often failed and was always complicated. But with BackupPilot, should data loss occur for any reason, the restoration of files, applications, PCs and even complete servers is vastly more reliable and more straightforward.
